About Chambered
Chambered is an independent firearm compatibility, education, and state-law reference tool built for U.S. gun owners who want a fast, honest answer to the question: “Is this legal where I live, and does this part fit my platform?”
Why this exists
Firearm law in the United States is a moving target — 50+ state regimes, dozens of city and county overlays, and hundreds of bills in motion at any given moment. Most existing resources are either out of date, buried in PDF statutes, or written to sell you a product. Chambered was built to close that gap with plain-English summaries, direct statute citations, and a live feed of pending legislation from LegiScan.
On the builder side, most firearms retailers assume you already know which parts are compatible with your platform. That’s a bad assumption for anyone new to the hobby. Our builder walks through each part with jurisdiction-aware restrictions surfaced inline, so you know before you buy whether a threaded barrel or a standard-capacity magazine is going to be a problem.
How we source content
- State laws: The compliance matrix for all 50 states plus DC is compiled from primary sources — state penal codes, executive orders, and enacted legislation. Every fact row links to the underlying statute where available. Bespoke intros for the 16 highest-traffic states are hand-written with direct statutory citations (Cal. Penal Code, Tex. Gov’t Code, Fla. Stat., N.Y. Penal Law, and so on).
- Pending legislation: Live-synced from the LegiScan API under CC BY 4.0. Bill status, text, and last-action dates flow through directly from the state legislative information systems.
- Education modules: Platform lessons (AR-15, AR-10, AK-47, 1911, 9mm pistol, shotgun, precision rifle, revolver) are original writing based on manufacturer documentation, armorer references, and industry-standard build practices. Images are Wikimedia Commons and Unsplash under their respective licenses; credit is displayed alongside each image.
- Retailer product data: Suggested products in the builder are pulled from public retailer inventory. Chambered never handles firearm transactions — every purchase happens on the retailer’s site, subject to their FFL and background check process.
Editorial independence
Chambered accepts affiliate compensation from retailers we link to (see the affiliate disclosure). We only link to retailers whose inventory we’d already recommend on the merits. No retailer pays for placement or edits our compliance content. If we’re wrong about a law, we’d rather fix it than protect an affiliate relationship.
Not legal advice
Chambered is an educational tool, not a substitute for a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction. Laws change frequently and case law shifts even faster. Verify against the official state code before acting on anything you read here, and consult an attorney for any specific legal question.
